It was great to relive this game on your web site, as I ,at nine years old was at Yankee Stadium that day with my dad. The moment of that game that stands out was when there was one out in the top of the 9th with runners at 1st and 3rd. Jimmy’s Piersall’s fly ball to right was hit very deep, almost to the warning track. At that distance from the plate, one would think that the runner at 3rd. would easily tag up and score to break Jim Bouton’s shut out. However, Roger Maris threw a strike to home plate. I remember the runner at 3rd was about half way down the line when he suddenly stopped and ran back the 3rd base. Maris’ unbelieveable throw would have certainlly gotten the runner out. The crowd gave Maris a well deserved ovation. Then Bouton got the last out and with it, a shutout.
